White sugarcane aphid continues to be a serious problem in grain sorghum fields across Mississippi and the Mid-South. Because this is a brand new pest, there are many questions still unanswered. The Mid-South Entomology Working Group is frantically working on this issue to provide answers. At this time Transform insecticide is the only product providing acceptable control but treatments are only holding 7-14 days before retreatment is required. It appears that on some of the later planted grain sorghum that it would not be possible to finish the season out with only 2 applications of Transform allowed per season.

Just today, EPA announced an amendment to allow 3 applications as long as we do not exceed the seasonal use limit of 3 oz. per acre. Because we have been recommending 1 oz. rates in MS, this will allow a desperately needed third application in many fields.
