Early this spring we received a call from a grower requesting assistance irrigating a new property he had acquired. Historically the property had been in a rice/soybean rotation. As you can see by the elevation map, the property was not to grade. The previous growers had tried every irrigation method available from pulling levees to boarder irrigation with only marginal success. Traditionally, previous growers had planted the field north to south. (click on the images to enlarge)
After evaluating the field layout using Google earth, we suggested the grower plant the field perpendicular to the levees. We felt that by changing the row direction with the natural fall of the field and utilizing Pipe Planner, we could successfully irrigated 95% of the field. The grower utilized his GPS guidance system to plant the field, logging as he planted. By logging the planter operation we were able to capture the elevation data of the field.
Utilizing Pipe Planner to design the irrigation solution proved to be effortless. After imputing the grower and field information we enter the well location and pipe layout. The grower supplied us with the well flow rate. Having the ability to import the logged data from the planter operation allowed us to complete the solution from our desktop and email the grower the results.
“I picked up this place late in the spring.” “Instead of attempting to guess how to irrigate this place, which direction to run the pipe? what hole size to use?, using Pipe Planner made my decisions a lot easier!” ” All those point rows scared the crap out of me!, Pipe Planner works!” “I had a couple of issues with side slope and a ridge or two, I’m already planning for next year based on what I have learned.” “Thanks for all the help!” (Grower comments)
