Cotton variety trials were conducted throughout Mississippi in 2017. Small plot official variety trials (OVT) were conducted at the following nine locations: Verona (dryland), Starkville (dryland), Brooksville (dryland), Senatobia (dryland), Lucedale (dryland), Tunica (irrigated), Clarksdale (dryland), Stoneville (irrigated), and Eden (irrigated). Small plot OVT trials consist of 2 rows per variety that are 35 to 40 feet in length. All plots are replicated 4 times at each location. All locations were sprayed multiple times with Prevathon to mitigate damage from lepidopteran insects. Small plot OVT trials are designed to evaluate differences in yield at a given location due to genetics.
Large plot, on-farm trials were conducted at 17 locations throughout the state in 2017. Large plot variety trials are designed to test a limited number of varieties that are managed throughout the season by the cooperating grower. Large plot trials are planted and harvested using grower equipment. One plots are established, they are managed throughout the year by the grower and MSU personnel assist with harvest and determine plot weights at the end of the season. Large plot trials are designed to evaluate variety performance in a grower managed production system.
We are still awaiting fiber data for a number of locations; however, preliminary data can be accessed below.
