A crisis Exemption for Intrepid 2F (methoxyfeonzide) has been approved in Mississippi to control fall armyworms in rice. We had received numerous reports of unacceptable control of fall armyworms with pyrethroids in late June and early July across the state. Those failures were occurring in multiple crops including early planted rice. Over the last month, populations have continued to increase across the state and numerous fields have required insecticide applications. Alternative insecticides are readily available in other crops, but extremely limited in rice. The only alternative insecticide labeled in rice that will provide effective control of fall armyworm is diflubezuron (Dimilin), but that insecticide has an 80 day preharvest interval and is no longer a viable option. Because of that, we suggested that the Mississippi BPI submit a Section 18 request to the EPA last week. They did a great job getting this done in a timely manner. The Specific Exemption is still under review at EPA, but applications of Intrepid 2F can be made to rice for fall armyworms until EPA makes a determination on the Specific Exemption.
The crisis exemption is for Intrepid 2F only and does not include other formulations of methoxyfenozide.
The approved label is included below, but some key points include:
- Intrepid 2F can be applied at 4-8 oz/A, but 4 oz should be sufficient in most cases
- No more than 2 applications can be made and the re-treatment interval is 10 days
- The preharvest interval is 14 days
