Catches of bollworm moths in pheromone traps were higher this week than last and were generally higher than average for this time of year. Tobacco budworm catches were also up, but were still a relatively small number. At this time almost all bollworm (corn earworm) moths will lay their eggs in corn that has ears with green silk. Many studies over the years have failed to measure any yield loss from corn earworm larvae feeding in corn ears, even with 100% ears infested.
