Emergency Exemption Approved for Endigo ZC in MS Rice

The MDAC Bureau of Plant Industry recently submitted a Section 18 request to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the use of Endigo ZC to control rice stink bug in rice.  The EPA approved that request late yesterday (July 28, 2022).

We started having some failures with pyrethroids late last summer (2021). Based on early reports this year, several people were not getting acceptable control with pyrethroids this year again and the failures were more widespread.  Additionally, availability of alternative insecticides has been extremely limited this year.

The approved Section 18 label allows up to 4 applications of Endigo ZC at rates from 4.5-6.0 fl. oz/A (1 to 28.4 – 1 to 21.3).  The label comes with a 21 day preharvest interval, a 5 day retreatment interval, and a 24 hour restricted entry interval.  Also, “do not release flood water within 7 days of an application” to protect aquatic taxa.  Please refer to the approved Section 18 Label for other instructions.

The table below shows results from a test we conducted in Stoneville in 2021.  At 2 days after the application, Warrior II (lambda-cyhalothrin) only provided 53% control. In contrast, we were able to get 79-89% control with Endigo ZC at the 5.0 and 6.0 fl oz rates, respectively.  In most cases, the 5.0 fl oz rate will provide acceptable control unless populations are high or you need added residual control.
