On March 31, the USDA-NASS released its 2025 Prospective Plantings Report. This report is significant for the market as it provides the USDA’s initial estimates of planted acres for the 2025 crop year. These acreage estimates are based primarily on surveys conducted in the first two weeks of March. Estimates will be further updated after planting in the June Acreage report. The report can be found at: https://release.nass.usda.gov/reports/pspl0325.pdf.

Estimates of planted acres in the U.S. are presented in Table 1. U.S. corn acreage is projected to increase by 5 percent from 2024, reaching 95.3 million acres. In 2025, soybean acreage is estimated at 83.5 million acres, a decrease of % from 2024. Cotton acreage is expected to decline to 9.9 million acres in 2025, representing a 12% decrease from 2024. Additionally, rice acreage is projected to decrease by 15,000 acres compared to 2024, while peanut acreage is estimated to increase.

Planted acreage estimates for Mississippi can be found in Table 2. In Mississippi, it is projected that corn acreage will increase significantly while cotton acreage is projected to decline. Specifically, corn acreage is estimated to rise by 41% in 2025, reaching 690,000 acres. In contrast, cotton acreage is anticipated to decrease by 31%, resulting in a total of 360,000 acres. Soybeans continue to be the dominant crop in the state, with an estimated 2.25 million acres planted. Consistent with the national trend, rice acreage is projected to decline slightly, while peanut acreage is expected to increase.
