Fungicide Applications in Wheat: Targeting Disease to Prevent Yield Loss (updated 3/13/13) Updated

Deciding on a specific fungicide depends on the particular disease in the field. Also, response of a fungicide, as related to wheat yield, will depend on the particular disease, susceptibility of a particular variety, as well as the fungicide applied and at what growth stage the application is made. Results from two 2012 foliar fungicide trials are included to aid in fungicide selection. Wheat Stripe Rust Detected in Mississippi Updated

Stripe rust was positively confirmed in two wheat fields near Greenwood, MS on Monday, February 25, 2013. At this time, with the fluctuating environment we are observing the situation prior to making a management decision since cooler temperatures may reduce the likelihood of spread within the two fields. Have a Plan for Managing Sugarcane Beetles in Field Corn Updated

Sugarcane beetles (Euetheola humilis rugiceps), have caused many Mississippi corn producers major headaches in the last decade. Ironically enough, most of the problem areas are in the Hill region of the state and not the Delta region. Sugarcane beetles are certainly present in the Delta but rarely cause widespread problems in corn (to date). Sugarcane beetle infestations are sporadic in nature but heavy infestations can be very serious and require replanting in some situations. Unfortunately there are no viable rescue treatments available, so this pest has to be managed at planting.
