Stripe rust was detected in wheat in Washington County, MS in the wheat variety trial plots. Wheat fields in MS should be scouted at this time for the presence of stripe rust. Fungicide applications with products in the triazole (DMI) class of fungicides will prevent spread of the disease and in some cases where the disease has occurred and been observed in a wheat field may protect yield.

Southern corn rust continues to be observed throughout MS. We continue to receive calls regarding late fungicide applications (> R4/R5) to reduce yield losses attributed to southern rust. Numerous myths regarding the disease have been widely spread throughout the MS corn production area including death of a corn plant in as fast as 7 days following southern rust infection and lodging as a result of heavy southern rust infection.
White sugarcane aphid infestations are increasing across the state and more applications are going out to manage this pest. Over the last week to 10 days we have heard about numerous fields that have received a second application. Remember, that the Section 18 label for Transform states that no more than 2 applications can be made in a field.
We had a few calls over the last week about poor control of cotton aphid with Transform. In all of those cases, the field was actually sprayed for plant bugs with a 1.5 oz rate of Transform. That rate should be very effective on cotton aphid based on previous experience. As a result, we collected aphids from three different fields this week to test their susceptibility to Transform.
As more and more of the rice crop starts to head, it is time to start thinking about rice stink bug. We have been sweeping some grass around the Delta for the last few weeks, and the one general comment I will make is that populations have been fairly low in most areas. We have seen fairly high numbers in a couple places, but it was small patches of heading grass in isolated locations.
Once again, bacterial blight has been observed in the MS cotton crop. At present, several fields in the south and north Delta as well as a single field in east MS have been observed to contain bacterial blight infected cotton leaves. To date (July 8, 2014), a single cotton variety has been reported to be infected in all fields.
It appears that 2014 is going to be the year of the armyworm in rice. I have had numerous calls, texts, and Tweets about armyworms in rice over the last week. If you have not had them in your rice to this point, consider yourself very lucky.
Diagnosing nutrient deficiencies is not rocket science, but can be cumbersome. Many nutrient related issues occur early in season and can sometimes mimic herbicide injury in appearance. In many instances it is difficult to tell the two apart. Most often
To date this has been a fairly light corn disease year. However, some lesser observed diseases, such as anthracnose leaf blight can be observed on the lowest leaves in some corn fields. Common rust, northern corn leaf blight, and to a much lesser extent southern corn leaf blight can also be observed in some corn fields.
The soybean crop ranges from still in the bag to around V5 stage on average across Mississippi. Over the last 10 days I have received numerous calls (mostly from Delta region) about bollworms attacking vegetative stage soybeans. Arkansas has also reported high numbers of bollworms in soybeans. In fact, AR has some fields where bollworms are infesting emerging soybeans in the crook stage and eating them to the ground where vegetation was present during planting.
Fungicide resistance has continued to be a hot topic during the off-season. Since 2010, fungicide resistance within the frogeye leaf spot fungal population has been documented in several states including Mississippi. To prevent the development of fungicide resistance from increasing several important steps can be followed. Several of these specific topics will be outlined in this three part series regarding fungicide resistance.

Corn fungicide questions continue to be made even in situations where corn has reached dent. In general, making a fungicide application at dent or later corn growth stages only pays off if excessive disease pressure is observed prior to the fungicide application being made. Moreover, making a fungicide application to a foliar disease tolerant hybrid will likely not pay off since the genes present in the hybrid should be relied on for preventing yield loss as a result of foliar disease.
Once again this season soybean rust has been detected early in July. A single infected leaf was discovered in a soybean sentinel plot in Pearl River County on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Historically this is 4 days earlier than last season (2012) and 2 days earlier than the earliest occurrence of rust in MS that occurred in 2007 on kudzu. At present, no additional management scenarios are necessary. We continue to scout to determine how widespread infection may be across south MS.
Northern corn leaf blight and common rust continue to be identified in corn fields throughout the south Delta. Determining the specific corn hybrids planted in each field is an important first step every season. For the most part, save for a couple of fields, NCLB has still been detected at extremely low levels (= 1 lesion per leaf per plant).
Several common diseases have been observed in the MS corn crop over the past week. Common rust and northern corn leaf blight are typical diseases in corn and are likely the result this early in the season due to the cooler than normal temperatures and ample rainfall we’ve received over the past month. But, with the generally atypical environment we’ve experienced this season the likelihood of more non-typical foliar diseases occurring is potentially increased. Proper diagnosis prior to a management decision is therefore increasingly important.
The 2013 Scout School dates have been set. The first will be June 4th from 9:00 a.m -12:00 p.m. at the Delta Research and Extension Center in the auditorium of the main building. The last one will be on the main campus of Mississippi State University in the Clay Lyle Entomology Building conference room.
Use the information contained in this blog post to aid in determining the specific disease in field corn. Scouting corn for the presence of disease is difficult and can be confusing since some foliar diseases appear similar to one another such as gray leaf spot and southern corn leaf blight. In addition, particular diseases are more important depending on the particular growth stage when they are encountered.
Additional stripe rust has been detected throughout the MS Delta over the past two weeks. Scout fields for the presence of stripe rust to determine the extent of the infection in the wheat production area. Keep in mind that stripe rust will appear different on younger wheat plants still in the early vegetative stages than it does on more mature wheat plants.
Stripe rust was positively confirmed in two wheat fields near Greenwood, MS on Monday, February 25, 2013. At this time, with the fluctuating environment we are observing the situation prior to making a management decision since cooler temperatures may reduce the likelihood of spread within the two fields. In addition to information regarding the current situation information is included to tell the difference between leaf, stripe, and stem rust in our production system.
Soybean rust has been detected for the first time during the 2012 season in George County in southeastern, MS. Additional information regarding the specific find as well as management scenarios are included in the blog update. Bacterial blight of cotton has once again been observed in the MS cotton production area. Angular lesions associated with the disease can easily be confused with many other foliar diseases as well as other important issues in cotton. Observe the photos for help in scouting for the disease that until the past two seasons has been a fairly rare occurrence in MS.
This season’s corn crop, particularly that planted in early March, is extraordinarily early. However, it will still need additional irrigation or rainfall to finish the crop out. This article discusses crop progress and methods to schedule and terminate irrigation water for corn.
Over the past few days reports of northern corn leaf blight and gray leaf spot have increased in the MS corn crop. However, common rust is still the only rust that has been observed in MS. Keep in mind that in some cases common rust, on the lowest leaves in the corn canopy, can take on the appearance of southern rust.
